Karl-Heinz Riedle

German international Karl-Heinz Riedle was supposed to be a goal machine, but 11 in three seasons tells its own story.

Riedle arrived in England from Borussia Dortmund for £1.7 million in 1997, but he struggled to hold down a starting place due to the emergence of Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.

During the 1997-1998 campaign he managed to score six times in the league in 25 appearances, before playing 34 times during the following season.

Riedle’s return was even less impressive as the German found the back of the net just five times and he was moved on to Fulham.
