Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has stated the absolute bleeding obvious about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and we all rolled our eyes.

The Liverpool Echo reported that Thompson was talking about players the club should be targeting and mentioned the Borussia Dortmund man.

“I do feel that come January we need to improve the defenders and get an out-and-out striker,” the newspaper reported that he said. “If… Aubameyang became available then he should be on our hit list.”

Everyone can see that the Reds needs an improvement in attack and that a clinical striker would help the team, but that doesn’t mean you get to shout out names of good players and demand they be signed.

Like throwing a handful of raw pasta at a wall and hoping it will stick, Thompson may have well just rattled off a list of players who have scored more than 20 goals in a season in the hope that Jurgen Klopp will sign one of them.

Gonzalo Higuain! Lionel Messi! Diego Costa! Romelu Lukaku! Let’s sign them Jurgen. They’ll improve us Jurgen. Jurgen? JURGEN!?

There is absolutely no basis to the suggestion of an Aubameyang to Liverpool move other than he is a good player. And he is, nobody can argue that.

But just wandering around saying if this lad becomes available we should sign him is just silly. Of course we should sign him if he becomes available, he’s world class you silly sausage!

Thompson the player and Thompson the pundit are in different realms of ability and the latter should probably think a bit harder before he goes about listing good strikers who Klopp should sign.

And anyway, that ignores the existing options and presents its own problems as well. Will that mean we sell Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Divock Origi as well? What about Dominic Solanke. It goes on.

So please, the next time a pundit – and this goes for them all – makes a point, please make it insightful, so the degree that only ex-players can give (because that’s why they’re the only ones who can get a job as one, isn’t it). Otherwise you might as well pay me to say that.
