Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah had a stellar performance for Egypt this week showing why he and the Liverpool can be so dangerous.

After a handful of games full of missed chances and opportunities it could be easy for Liverpool fans to feel downcast about the Reds’ chances this season. There is no expectation that we will solve our defensive issues this season without new personnel. Yet the hope that our attack would be good enough to carry the team has been sent crashing after our recent performances.

When you are in a run of disappointing results it’s hard to imagine what anything else feels like. However, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah showed the world what our players can do as he led his side to a crucial international victory against Congo to take Egypt to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A hopeful ball forward midway through the first half was turned into a goal in three swift moves; a silky cushioned touch; a burst of pace; a clever finish past the on rushing keeper. It was a beautiful goal. But it was not enough.

Egypt conceded late on before winning a penalty deep into stoppage time. Team talisman Mohamed Salah stepped up. The weight of the nation upon him. He wasn’t even born the last time Egypt qualified for the World Cup. He brushed off all that disappointment and expectation and powered home the penalty to send the nation into rapture.

While Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge are players that ebb and flow with their confidence levels. Mohamed Salah is a player unaffected by past failure and recent misses. He has the perfect mindset to go out against Manchester United on Saturday and tear them apart. Sadio Mane has that too.
