Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

Left Back. Liverpool. JOE GOMEZ. 8. He had one shaky moment in the early exchanges but had little to do defensively after the first 15 minutes. United sat back so deep and allowed him to get forward. He put in a beautiful cross that Emre Can turned over when he should have scored. Asserted his dominance over Martial all the way through the second half and is clearly Klopp’s choice of right back against big sides.

JOEL MATIP. 7. This is the Joel Matip we love and need. So calm and collected. Never out of place and led the line with leadership and style. Came closest to scoring with an instinctive shot in the six yard box that forced a wonder save from David de Gea. Despite all of us being down on the Matip/Lovren partnership it does have the potential to be solid.. Center Back. Liverpool

DEJAN LOVREN. 7. He is a very good defender in this type of game situation. Romelu Lukaku had hardly any space or time to influence the game and Lovren marked him out of the game. Some great covering late on to deny Ashley Young a run on goal. Makes you wonder why United didn’t test him more often. A welcome good game from the much maligned Croatian.. Center Back. Liverpool

7. Slightly shaky start but settled as Liverpool did in the first half. Made a fantastic block on Ashely Young after Mignolet’s first half save from Lukaku. Attacking movement as good as always but still needs more end product in those good situation. Was able to play the entire second half as an attacker as whatever ambition Man Utd had vanished after the break.. Left Back. Liverpool. ALBERTO MORENO
