Comparing the early years of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to Brendan Rodgers’ start is pointless and stupid. Here is why it is so foolish:

We’ve all seen those stats rolled out by the Manc-loving Sky Sports and the gleeful Scouse baiting media outlets. The comparison of Klopp’s first 48 games (or whatever) against Rodgers’. Yeah, they are the same or Klopp’s worse or whatever Duncan Castles and bitter Everton fans want to retweet. Those comparisons are pointless for lots of reasons. And I am going to tell you ALL of the reasons.

Brendan Rodgers wasn’t fired for his first two years in charge. In fact, his second year charge was PHENOMENAL. He took us to the brink of a title and while we didn’t win he gave us the most exciting we have had since the treble season in 2000/01. So when you are comparing Rodgers’ first two years to Klopp’s you are actually drawing a comparison to something that was fun and surprisingly successful.

One thing that makes the whole comparison moot is Luis Suarez. We may not have known it at the time but Luis Suarez was difference between finishing sixth and finishing second. During his time at the club he was the third, or maybe fourth, best player in the world. He went on to win everything with Barcelona.

Thought exercise: Take away Harry Kane from Spurs and where do they finish. Yeah, fifth at best. Add Luis Suarez from 2014 or Harry Kane to this Liverpool team and how do we do? Yeah much better, even with a car crash of a defense.

But the real difference is in the caliber and character of the men. Brendan Rodgers is a decent enough guy but he also left his wife, had a massive picture of himself on the wall and would regularly embarrass us with David Brent-esque management speak.

Jurgen Klopp has already convinced top players – Salah, Mane, Keita and van Dijk – to move to Liverpool. Something Rodgers NEVER did. All his good players were inherited (Gerrard, Carragher, Henderson, Suarez, Sterling) or desperate to resurrect their careers (Sturridge and Coutinho). Klopp is a charismatic leader and a coach that players want to join and will sacrifice money and opportunity to work with him.

We all know that what matters most is winning. And Jurgen Klopp hasn’t won enough. Eventually that will be a problem. But comparing these two men right now is as comical as our defending.
