Sturridge needs to make way for Brewster and Wilson to shine
By David Gate
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has not done enough to keep his place. He needs to make way for youngsters Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster to shine.
There was a moment in time when Daniel Sturridge was England’s best striker. Wayne Rooney was sharply on the decline and Harry Kane’s ascendancy had only begun. Sturridge was the man. He was the piercing blade at the top of Liverpool’s killer 2013/14 attack. An incisive forward and a ruthless marksman.
But that was then and things move on. Two years of injury struggles have robbed the Englishman of the pace he relied on. His good attitude and instincts remain but he does not have the body or consistency to make a difference. His sole starting opportunity in the Premier League against Newcastle was a disappointment. He has yet to change a game from the bench.
We have already seen the need to shift towards youth with our failing defenders. Now we need to make a shift to youth in our attack. Dominic Solanke is first in line for an opportunity after ousting Divock Origi in the pecking order. But after Solanke it should be Harry Wilson and England Under 17 star Rhian Brewster to be next in line for first team chances.
Harry Wilson has been setting the PL2 alight. He has six goals in five appearances and won PL2 player of the month for September. He scored this week against Manchester United Under 23’s to send Liverpool to the top of the PL2.
Rhian Brewster has scored 6 goals for England Under 17’s in his last two games and is the top scorer in the youth World Cup. He will be returning in a week and should be in consideration for more opportunity with the first team. Yes he is young, but he is special.

I see no reason for us to continue with Sturridge. Stick him in the Under 23’s with Danny Ings. If he bags a ton of goals then maybe we bring him back in to the first team. Right now he is just getting in the way of the young stars.
