The abuse Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is experiencing over social media is not acceptable.

After several below standard performances, Lovren experienced his nadir against Tottenham Hotspur and was hooked after 31 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp took that decision after the Croatian was responsible for two of Spurs’ early goals and he hasn’t featured for the team since.

But some disgusting fans have decided to take matters into their own hands and launch a horrible, poorly judged hate campaign against the former Southampton player.

It has reach such levels where the player has been forced into sharing an example on his Instagram story – something that was picked up and put on Reddit.

This particular nugget of narrow-minded spite was directly at Lovren’s family as well as the player himself, and thankfully the majority of decent Liverpool fans – and decent people – have leaped to condemn those words.

Behavior like that should never be tolerated and the fact that some people think it’s okay to threaten a player and those closest to him is atrocious.

As much as we all love football and the club, nobody goes out to play badly on purpose and at the end of the day it is just a game. We all go home after the match and go about our daily lives during the week.

Passions will always run high due to the tribal nature of sport and that’s okay. In fact, that’s more than okay – it’s needed. Without it sport would be bland and tasteless.
