Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

Center Back. Liverpool. EMRE CAN. 7. Played as the right center back as part of the back three. In his first season at Liverpool under Rodgers he played in that defensive system so has some experience. Scored midway through the first half with a towering header from Coutinho’s corner. Settled into to the defensive role as the game moved on.

Liverpool’s only recognized defender playing in the back line today. The central position of the back three is good for the Croatian as he can play a sweeper role which compensates for his lack of pace. It also gives him two easy passing options left and right for him to utilize simply. HIs composure and experience was crucial with his two makeshift center half partners.. Center Back. Liverpool. DEJAN LOVREN. 7

7. No one saw this coming. Gini Wijnaldum played as the left sided center back in the back three and had a decent game. It took 10 minutes for him to settle down and find his rhythm and positioning. Once there he kept everything simple and tidy. This bold line up ended up being a tactical masterclass from the manager.. Center Back. Liverpool. GINI WIJNALDUM
