Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

JOE GOMEZ. 6. The first half showed why he has a serious claim to be England’s best defender at present. Another outstanding display from the youngster who was paired with Alexis Sanchez for most of the game and was clearly the better of the two. The second half provided much of the same but one moment of lapse handed Arsenal the initiative to get back into the match. Sanchez only had that one moment but that was all he needed.. Right Back. Liverpool

Center Back. Liverpool. RAGNAR KLAVAN. 6. Some good determined work from Klavan in the first half. There was a mini sequence of tackles just before the break where the Estonian did well to break up an Arsenal attack. He’s a solid defender but when Arsenal found the extra energy and zip he is not good enough to keep up with a team who can attack like that.

Had a great opportunity midway through the first half from a free kick. He should have squared the ball but instead got a bad touch and it went out of play for a goal kick. Shortly after he had a thumping header away from a corner. After Arsenal scored they needed leadership to steady the nerves. That should come from Lovren as the senior defender but he looked more clueless than anyone.. Center Back. Liverpool. DEJAN LOVREN. 6

7. The left foot of Andrew Robertson was clearly part of the early game plan. A slew of back post crosses for Firmino and Salah tried to find the weakness between Monreal and Maitland-Niles. Found the game harder after Arsenal woke up and started hassling and harrying. There are times where he loos a little lightweight. Needs to get stronger.. Left Back. Liverpool. ANDREW ROBERTSON
