Liverpool are pursuing the signing of FC Basel defender Manuel Akanji to bolster the back line. Here is our Liverpool transfer profile of the Swiss star.

The overhaul of Liverpool’s back four continues apace. Just over 24 hours after sealing the world record transfer for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton the club are said to be pursuing another central defender. The three names being quoted in the media are Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao, Jose Gimenez from Athletico Madrid and, most frequently, Manuel Akanji from FC Basel.

The Swiss international has risen into the consciousness of the wider football world this season through his performances in the Champions League. He helped his side to four clean sheets in their six group games. This has grabbed the attention of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund. Manager Jurgen Klopp is trying to seal the deal for the Reds. Here is a transfer profile for our latest target.

Physical Attributes

He is listed as 6ft 2in but you would swear he was a little taller. This is largely due to his long legs. He seems to have that Vieira-esque ability to stick out a leg – Inspector Gadget style – and nick the ball from an attacker. He is another keeping in line with Klopp’s desire to make our team faster. There are numerous clips of him using pace to recover from through balls and to cover for his teammates. Yes please.

Technical Attributes

There are two types of passes that you notice in his game tap; the short simple lay off to the nearest player and the raking 50 yard pass switching the play. With the pace that Liverpool have on the wings it is exciting to think of having a center back who can spread the play quickly. He can play with the ball at this feet and his head up and eyes downfield.

Mental Attributes

Klopp will love his flexibility. He can play at any spot in a central partnership or a back three. There are even clips of him at right back. That tactical fluidity is crucial to Klopp’s system. He also has a bite to his game. Akanji is a heavy tackler and a fierce competitor. Liverpool have lacked bite in their side in recent seasons. He will be an incredible addition to the squad and a top Liverpool transfer.
