Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

A quiet first half for the right back as the Reds sat deeper than usual without the pressing game that we are famous for. With Gudmundsson the biggest threat from the Burnley midfield Alexander-Arnold played it safe and did not embark on his normal attacking runs from deep. A good interception at he beginning of the second 45 minutes stopped a promising Burnley move. Made the opening goal with a gut busting run and a deflected cross for Mane to slam home. Fired a rasping shot that Pope could only parry.. Right Back. Liverpool. TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD. 7

DEJAN LOVREN. 8. The way Burnley play is perfect for the things Lovren is good at. And yes, he is good and some things! Ashely Barnes does not have the pace or craft to worry a player of Lovren’s experience and skill set. Came up trumps with the header in stoppage time to give Klavan the tap in.. Center Back. Liverpool

Liverpool. RAGNAR KLAVAN. 8. The first Estonian to score in the Premier League! It is a testament to the hard work and consistency of the Estonian that we are now relieved to see his name on the team sheet. Currently the leading candidate to be Virgil van Dijk’s regular partner at center half. He made a lofted pass to put in Firmino and Lallana in the second half as Liverpool were pressing for a second. Coutinho would have been proud of that one! His late goal gave Reds the happiest of new years.. Center Back

6. Making his first start at left back since Brendan Rodgers was Liverpool manager. Doesn’t matter where you play him he is going to do he business for you. His decision making is exceptional for a 20-year-old. Never takes unnecessary risks or panics under pressure. And yet just as he did against Arsenal he fell asleep at the back post for the opposition to equalize. Spoiled an otherwise smart performance.. Left Back. Liverpool. JOE GOMEZ
