Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed why he moved to Liverpool from Arsenal last summer; to push himself and be free to attack.

We have spent the last six months wondering why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came to Liverpool? He had the option of joining Chelsea, the Premier League Champions in August. They were offering more money and a more immediate chance of silverware.

Instead he chose to join Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. This is despite the fact that there were no immediate positions available in the first team.

He has spent the first half of this season learning. After a rocky start to his Anfield career he has won fans over and is now a crucial part of this Liverpool side. His goal on Sunday against Manchester City sent Liverpool off towards a classic win.

After that game he spoke to Arlo White, Lee Dixon and Graeme Le Saux of the NBC Sports team. They pressed him about leaving Arsenal and the move to Liverpool. Specifically asking him about playing wing back and his best position.

The Englishman responded with “just let me attack”. He had grown tired at Arsenal of playing wide defensive positions. And that was all Chelsea were offering him – to compete with Victor Moses as a wing back.

He felt his best position was in central areas; dribbling forward and driving the attack from deep areas. Jurgen Klopp agrees.

Yes he can cover for the wide forward positions well. But Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have those locked down and are going nowhere.

Oxlade-Chamberlain brings a verve to the Liverpool midfield that has been missing this season. Emre Can is the best option in the ‘number 4’ anchor man role. Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson are Swiss army knife, do everything midfielders. Oxlade-Chamberlain is an attacker. And long may Klopp let him do his thing. Thank you Arsenal.
