Liverpool player ratings: Defenders

6. Totally at ease defensively as Swansea rarely threatened the wings. While not at fault for the Swansea goal he was picked today to help us at set pieces. That plan did not pan out for the manager. We desperately needed more attacking width to the side. It would have been much better for Klopp to start Trent Alexander-Arnold.. Right Back. Liverpool. JOE GOMEZ

7. Decent showing from Matip helped out by a very active midfield three that protected the center backs well. Patient and calm he thrives against teams who like to play it short. Reads that side of the game very well.. Center Back. Liverpool. JOEL MATIP

VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 8. Everything you want to see from the Dutchman. It was not a hard game for the Liverpool center backs as they spent more time attacking than defending. What there was to do, the record signing handled flawlessly. He won every clearance, interception and tackle he ventured into. Had two chances to score from corners. The first went just wide of the far post while the second was straight at the keeper. That Liverpool were relying on their defenders to create chances tells you a lot about the impotent midfield showing.. Center Back. Liverpool

7. Spent the best part of the first half, and the entire second half, in the Swansea half. Alway offering an option out wide and putting balls into the box. However that tactic was futile as Firmino tried to win an aerial battle with three competent Swansea center backs. Had a good chance to equalize but allowed the ball to come across his body to his favorite foot were Naughton made a great tackle. Should have hit it with his right.. Left Back. Liverpool.
