With only Dwight Gayle up front the two Liverpool big men had a straight forward first half; stopping Newcastle holding the ball up. Always talking. Always looking to play good football. Never beaten by pace or strength. There was much talk that van Dijk would not fix Liverpool’s defense single handedly. That theory is being tested as van Dijk is not simply putting in great displays but elevating the play of those around him.
