Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

7. More evidence that Trent Alexander-Arnold is now ahead of Joe Gomez in Klopp’s pecking order. This was as easy a game in a red shirt as he will ever have. Only minor amounts of defending to do and the attack did not need him bursting forward. Earned his pay check at a breeze.. Right Back. Liverpool. TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

Back in the side as he and Joel Matip are taking turns next to van Dijk. With only Dwight Gayle up front the two Liverpool big men had a straight forward first half; stopping Newcastle holding the ball up. Almost a guarantee he will start against Lukaku next weekend at Old Trafford.. Center Back. Liverpool. DEJAN LOVREN. 8

Always talking. Always looking to play good football. Never beaten by pace or strength. There was much talk that van Dijk would not fix Liverpool’s defense single handedly. That theory is being tested as van Dijk is not simply putting in great displays but elevating the play of those around him. There are some huge games coming up and let’s hope this run of form continues.. Center Back. Liverpool. VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 9

ANDREW ROBERTSON. 7. Following a week of plaudits and articles praising his coming as Liverpool’s best left back in 10 years, he put in a solid but unremarkable shift today. Got beaten for pace early by Yedlin and that checked his attacking instincts for the rest of the game.. Left Back. Liverpool
