Liverpool defender Joel Matip will miss the Champions League game against Manchester City and the rest of the season with injury.

The club confirmed on Twitter that Matip will need to go under the knife to repair a thigh problem and won’t be available for selection until the 2018/2019 campaign.

With the former Cameroon international out of contention, manager Jurgen Klopp will be left with just three options at center-back until the conclusion of the season.

Manchester City will provide a stern challenge for the Reds’ defense and Klopp would surely have wanted all the options available to him, but such is life.

Dejan Lovren is now sure to start the game on Wednesday night, and he’s been vying with Matip for the full season to fill that second spot in the back four.

The arrival of Virgil van Dijk has nailed down one of the central defenders positions, but none of those two has put their hand up as the unequivocal automatic partner for van Dijk.

In other news, playmaker Adam Lallana could still feature against this season after he limped off with a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace.

The BBC reported that Lallana’s knock was not as bad as initially thought, although it still represents a significant blow for Klopp and his plans for the rest of the season.

Lallana has endured an incredibly frustrating campaign and will have to write it off due to spending so much time on the treatment table.
