Former Red wins lifetime achievement award

Former Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert has won a lifetime achievement award, handed out to a model professional.

Lambert was given the Sir Tom Finney Award during the EFL Awards night, an evening in which Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon scooped Young Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year.

Lambert has famously scored in every division on the professional ladder and enjoyed success with a number of clubs, including Southampton, Bristol Rovers. The 36-year-old also hit three England goals in 11 appearances.

Over the course of his career the forward scored 99 League One goals in 211 appearances, 31 times in the Premier League from 120 games, hit the back of the net 36 times in League Two from 100 games and netted 31 goals from 60 Championship matches.

Lambert’s time at Liverpool came after a successful spell with the Saints, for whom he netted 115 goals in 230 games and registered 63 assists.

However, that Anfield spell was largely disappointing and the target man scored just three times from 36 appearances.

The Sir Tom Finney Award is given to a footballer who has contributed a massive amount to the EFL as well as the sport.

Lambert went from playing on the bottom rung of English football to the top in just six years and won the Championship golden boot in 2011/2012 and was named the league’s Player of the Year.

He was also the League One top scorer in 2009/2010 and 2008/2009 as he scored 31 goals for Southampton, while the season before he netted 29 times for Bristol Rovers.

Lambert played in a world cup, won the EFL Trophy and made his dream come true by featuring for his boyhood side.

While his contribution on the pitch may not have been the stuff dreams are made of, his story is and the striker will be able to hold onto that forever. Lambert is a deserved winner of the award.
