No. 4: Champions League Distraction

We would like to believe that these Liverpool players are highly focussed professionals who will not blink this week in the face of a huge Champions League semi-final. They will simply go about their jobs on Saturday and walk away from The Hawthorns with a clinical victory.

That may happen, we’ll see, but these are human beings and human beings have a tendency to be distracted and emotional.

It would be one thing if this current moment were a regular occurrence for these player; walking from big game to big game with cold professionalism. Yet none of these players have been in a Champions League semi-final before; this is a new experience for them.

To be fair to Klopp and the players, they have juggled the league and European games very well this year. They pulled out a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace ahead of the first leg against Man City a few weeks ago. Then played out a 0-0 derby draw with Everton with a reserve side in-between the two legs.

However the Reds only need to beat Chelsea to secure Champions League football next year. That is the only game they need to win. If they are not careful there could be some unconscious easing off that may take place at The Hawthorns.
