New reports about Liverpool target Timo Wermer should hang huge question marks over the potential deal.

Werner has been interviewed back in his homeland of Germany and said a few things about his future that are encouraging at first glance, but if you stop and think about it for a second all is not as it seems.

The 22-year-old’s club RB Leipzig have failed to qualify for the Champions League next season and will see one of their best players, Naby Keita, join the Reds on the 1st of July.

And the Liverpool Echo has reported that Werner thinks he will have to make a similar move in order to elevate his own game to world class status. While his honestly is refreshing, the interview he gave is destabilizing and you couldn’t see it being greeted warmly back home.

"“To become a world class player, I probably have to play on a club level in an even better team. Naby Keita has not become world class with us either, maybe now he’ll be at Liverpool,” he said.“I have four or five years left to learn, and then become world class.”"

It’s exciting to think about the team with the German in it, and his words definitely indicate that he’d welcome an approach from Jurgen Klopp – but the ‘come and get me’ plea should start to sow the seeds of doubt in Klopp’s mind.

We’ve seen time and time again that the boss doesn’t just sign good players, he signs good blokes who will buy into the team and the philosophy that goes with that. Right now, it doesn’t appear as if Werner would.

Who is to say that the youngster wouldn’t give a similar interview in a few years time if Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted to bring him to their side? You can see how poor that sort of speculation is with Philippe Coutinho’s move.

It’s natural for footballers to make the most of their short career, and Werner is coming to an age now where he needs to begin to make the most of his ability. But this is going about it the wrong way and should hang serious question marks over any move to Liverpool.
