No.5: Mohamed Salah

You might be saying to yourself that Mohamed Salah’s move to Liverpool was not a transfer debacle. Yes, it dragged on for a month or two but he ended up at Anfield and proved to be an absolute bargain.

We are not talking about his move from Roma. We are talking about way back in 2014 when Brendan Rodgers tried – very unsuccessfully – to bring him to the club.

It was January of 2014. Liverpool had a decent start to the season and were in a title challenge with Chelsea and Manchester City. The duo of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez had the Liverpool attack firing. They needed a bit of extra help to make them unstoppable and finish the season as Premier League winners.

Mohamed Salah was the man the club made the top priority. At one point we were 99% certain to get him. We were first in line and he was willing to come to Anfield. And then we started negotiating on the price.

It went on and on; never meeting FC Basel’s valuation. Eventually Chelsea and Jose Mourinho rock up the table; meet the asking price and he goes to Stamford Bridge. Gerrard went on to slip against the Blues as the Reds were unable to beat them at Anfield and the title went to City. We now know how good he could have been in Red that season. Life is cruel.
