Michael Owen

The inclusion of former explosive teenaged demi-God Michael Owen on this list should make a fair number of Liverpool fans pretty sad.

After exploding onto the scene, the lightning fast poacher hit 179 goals in just 306 games. After a start like that, you’d think the striker would have had a stand named after him by the end of his career.

But things went downhill after an engineered move to Real Madrid. The Reds got a paltry fee for Owen, around £12 million. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Chester born forward then moved to Manchester United after his Newcastle United deal expired.

That was the final straw for a lot of Liverpool fans, but how he ended up in Spain is the main driver of his snakey reputation. As the Guardian reported back then, Owen continued to say he wanted to remain a Red – but never signed a new contract and moved to Madrid with only six months remaining on his deal.

It shows alarming similarities with Can, and if you’re looking really hard for silver linings at least Liverpool got some money for him.
