Rumors of Liverpool making a huge £158 million bid for Marco Asensio from Real Madrid continue despite the claims of one top journalist.
If you dismissed the initial rumors of Liverpool making a club record bid of £158 million for Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio then I can sympathize. It sounds like one of those crazy summer rumors that newspapers churn out to get sales and clicks.
However, this one seems to be sticking. There are more reports today that the star playmaker is in the sights of the Liverpool transfer committee and that a bank breaking bid is being prepared. The Spanish rumor mill will not let this one go.
All this comes after leading Spanish journalist Guillem Balague tweeted yesterday that Liverpool have not made an offer but they do see him as having huge potential. He then stated that Real Madrid have shown no indication of wanting to sell him or that the player is interested. He then claims in parentheses that the club don’t want to sell him and he doesn’t want to leave.
How you take all this news will depend on if you are the optimistic or pessimistic sort. If you think this transfer may happen you can write off Balague’s remarks as the usual club denials in the early stages of a big transfer. They rarely issues statements saying “yeah, we are totally up for selling one of our hottest prospects”.
The pessimist can easily read this all as transfer window nonsense. Either way it is not likely to go away any time soon. If the paper’s are getting clicks they will keep putting it out there. If it is real then or at least potential, then a deal this big will be a transfer saga.
Next: Liverpool can make £150 MILLION from player sales
I am highly suspicious that Liverpool will double the record fee they paid out for Virgil van Dijk in January. The only way this transfer happens is if it is much nearer to the £100 million mark or lower.
