Raúl Meireles

The Liverpool career of Portuguese midfielder Raúl Meireles was an absolute whirlwind, although he did end up winning the League Cup during his only Anfield season.

Meireles was signed from Porto for £11.7 million and had a huge impact. The bald star featured an incredible 44 times during the 2010/2011 campaign and must have impressed rival scouts, because just one year later he was off to Chelsea.

What happened next?

£12.15 million was all it took the Blues to persuade Liverpool to part with their man, who won the Champions League and the FA Cup while playing at Stamford Bridge. They also finished two places and 12 points ahead of the Anfield outfit, who had a shocker of a season.

But like his Reds’ career, Meireles didn’t last long with Chelsea and was shipped off in September 2012 for a knock-down £9 million.

Despite only lasting a year in London, the midfielder scored six goals and created six others in 45 appearances. Two seasons, 89 games, 11 goals and 12 assists – yet nobody wanted him to stick around!
