Moses Simon, the £10m rated KAA Gent winger, spoke to media this week and announced that Liverpool are interested in signing him.

In what appears quite an outspoken interview with AOI Football, the Nigerian international said that he has been told about manager Jurgen Klopp’s interest in his services – and left the door open to a move to England.

The statement leaves little open for interpretation, as the player seems positive that discussions have been held between Liverpool and his agent.

“Yes, I can confirm my agent told me about Liverpool’s interest in me. I find it interesting and I leave the dealings with him and the club” – Moses Simon, speaking to AOI Football.

What remains to be seen is whether the Red’s interest was indeed anything more than a testing of the waters.

With the club recently finding themselves in hot water over a potential tapping up of former Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, it is unlikely the club will be doing anything untoward.

If the Simon interest is genuine from Liverpool, the chances are that either the players current club are aware of the interest, or the interaction was minimal.

In the current transfer market climate, all deals are extremely convoluted. It also has to be understood that each party within a transfer is pushing their own agenda.

Fans may want to dampen their own expectations of any potential signing when considering this point.

While the Nigerian may be telling the truth with regard to what his agent told him, this doesn’t mean his agent is really presenting all the accurate facts.

It is commonplace for agents to get their clients name out there for a variety of reasons, and having Simon linked to a club like Liverpool can only be a positive thing.

Whether it aids the negotiation of a new contract, increases his price-tag, or alerts other clubs to his talent and availability, it’s win-win.

Simon has clearly been on the LFC radar for some time. The reports have popped up numerous times in recent years. However, those hoping to see the speedy winger at Anfield next season may be out of luck.

Having just signed Xherdan Shaqiri, Liverpool appear to have already completed their shopping for a versatile, pacey wide player that adds depth to their squad.

While the signing of Shaqiri far from rules out additional signings of the likes of Nabil Fekir, it is unlikely that the club will be looking at acquiring multiple players for the same position.
