Liverpool starlet Harry Wilson has helped Derby County to a dramatic 94th minute win in their first game of the season.

Wilson has been sent on loan to the Rams, who are managed by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, and helped them secure a last-gasp win on the opening day of the Championship campaign.

The Welsh international played a full 90 minutes as Derby scored through Tom Lawrence to sink Reading 2-1.

Ex-Red Andre Wisdom lined up behind Wilson, who started on the right of a three man attack that also featured David Nugent and fellow Wales star Lawrence.

During his time at Hull City, Wilson proved that he can be a consistent goal threat – but he could only manage two shots from his 48 touches. Encouragingly, the majority of those took place in the opposition half as the starlet looked to influence things going forward.

A pass success rate of 68% could be improved upon, but Wilson made an impressive four tackles that put him in the top five for that metric out of both teams. This is one that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be happy about, as it shows the attacker is prepared to work hard and be the first line of defence.

And it’s also encouraging to see Lampard use Wilson in his first XI during his debut game as a manager. It shows that the boss places trust in the Welsh international, and it also indicates that the 21-year-old will get the game time that he needs to develop enough to challenge for a first team role when he returns to Anfield.

Interestingly, former Red Tiago Illori started for Reading. Illori never really got a chance at Anfield, but is now in his third campaign with the Royals and played 29 league games last season. Hopefully the 25-year-old can continue to get games and show why Liverpool briefly thought he’d be good enough for them.
