It is hard to look past the defending champions. They have one of the world’s best managers in Pep Guardiola and an overall strong squad. Their only real area of concern is defensive midfield, but I don’t think it will have a massive effect as they look to become the first team in a decade to retain the Premier League title.

After signing Alisson, Naby Keïta, Fabinho, and Xherdan Shaqiri, the Reds have one of the best squads in Europe. However, we might be short an attacking player (think a Nabil Fekir) to truly contend on all fronts. Additionally, the defense is still a worry.

Dejan Lovren has been excellent since around February, but it remains to be seen if it is just a purple patch. Matip, Klavan, and Gomez cannot be relied on for a full season, leaving Virgil van Dijk as the only truly dependable centreback. Alisson might also need time to adapt to the Premier League and his new teammates.

Liverpool’s Premier League challenge will depend on whether they can remain consistent for all 38 games. I’m just not sure they can right now.

Maurizio Sarri appears to have revitalized an underperforming Chelsea team, but their success is reliant on their ability to hold on to their best players and keep them hungry. Eden Hazard, Morata, Willian, and Courtois have all been rumored to leave the club.

I expect Tottenham to start slowly since nine players participated in the late stages of the World Cup and they haven’t brought in any reinforcements to help cover those absences. However, Mauricio Pochettino has proved to be an excellent manager and it is likely that the Spurs will be late bloomers and ultimately secure a Champions League place.
