For Liverpool to have a successful season, the Reds will need to maintain their offensive firepower while stabilizing their inconsistent defense. This is why I was torn between Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk for my prediction for player of the season. Ultimately, I think it will once again be Salah.
He is sure to be highly motivated after a disastrous end to his great season last year. Even before his shoulder injury, he already looked a bit fatigued and, with Liverpool signing the likes of Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, the Egyptian speedster should have to carry less of Liverpool’s attacking load throughout the season.
There’s also reason to be hopeful that Salah was not a one season wonder. He missed over 20 clear cut chances last year in the league. A quick gander at his stats also shows that his output has gradually increased over the past four seasons and I believe that it’ll continue to grow as Jurgen Klopp transforms him into more of a wide forward than just a pure winger.
