Clyne vs Alexander-Arnold: Who should start against Palace?
Liverpool take on Crystal Palace on Monday in the Barclays Premier League, but should Nathaniel Clyne or Trent Alexander-Arnold start at right-back?
Alexander-Arnold defied expectations as he took over from Clyne for the 2017/2018 campaign as the latter was struck down by persistent injuries that ruined his chances of playing a meaningful part in the season.
And Jurgen Kopp opted to keep the youngster in the side for the Hammers fixture, although Clyne was named among the substitutes. But should Klopp switch things around for the game next week?
Preseason games are great, but nothing can build fitness like actually playing competitive fixtures. And right now, that’s what Clyne needs. Klopp selecting the former Southampton man would also give him an important vote of confidence, which you’d imagine is important following a long-term lay-off.
On the other hand, Alexander-Arnold had a good game on Sunday and rewarding that with another selection is desirable. Plus there is an argument to be had that says he’s the better right-back and suits Klopp’s style more. The England international’s storming runs down the flank are mirrored by Andrew Robertson on the left, and provide an additional attacking outlet.
Both are now full internationals and so have some quality about them, and don’t forget how important Clyne was to the side before his write-of last season. The defender played 35, 33 and 37 times in the three campaigns leading up to 2017/2018 and will be desperate to remind Klopp how vital he can be.
Crystal Palace will likely attack down the wings using their star men Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha. A solid defensive presence will be required to deal with it, and this is where Clyne could edge Alexander-Arnold out.
As Liverpool fans are well aware, Klopp doesn’t just start anyone for the sack of it. He’ll only hand out positions when he feels the player is ready, but leaving Clyne stewing in his own juices won’t do any favours and the 27-year-old should be named in the XI to take on Palace on Monday.
