Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been nominated for the Puskas award for best goal, but has the wrong one been picked?

Salah’s effort against Everton in the Premier League was chosen, but fans think the Egyptian has netted better than that for the Reds.

The attacker muscled off a defender, cut inside the penalty box and curled an excellent effort across Jordan Pickford and into the back of the net. And if he wins, Salah might have the distinction of being the first player to collect the Puskas with his second best goal of the season.

His effort against Tottenham Hotspur that involved the curly haired jet-heeled superstar beating nearly the entire Spurs defense in a twisting, turning run of play in which the ball appeared to be glued to Salah’s feet surely has to be the better one.

Salah enjoys huge popularity around the globe and this may work in the Egyptian’s favour as a massive voting army tends to mobalize around the attacker whenever he’s up for an award decided by an internet poll.

Regular observers understand this all too well, and it’s not beyond the realms of imagination to suggest that something similar could happen with the Puskas.

Voting is now open, and the former Chelsea man will have to beat off prestigious competition if he is to collect the trophy. All strikes between 3rd July 2017 to 15th July 2018 can be nominated, and are chosen by FIFA panel. The winner is then subject to a public vote among users of the FIFA.com website.

Alongside household names such as Gareth Bale and Lionel Messi sit Riley McGree, who scored for Newcastle Jets against Melbourne City in Australia’s A-League and Giorgian de Arrascaeta – who hit the back of the net for Cruzeiro against America MG.

But if Salah is to make the most of his following and pick up the award, then surely he’ll have won it for the wrong goal. And that says a lot about how good he was last season.
