Liverpool legend Phil Thompson thinks Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is miles ahead of Tottenham counterpart Mauricio Pochettino.

The Reds legend compared the two squads each manager inherited and made the call that Klopp had done better work with what he was given.

Pochettino has also embarked on a team building project and has done good work, but Thompson reckoned that Pochettino started out with a much better group of players.

Klopp has spent a substantial amount of money this season to improve what Brendan Rodgers left behind, and the transfer of Naby Keita, Alisson Becker, Xherdan Shaqiri and Virgil van Dijk has certainly done that.

On the other hand, the Spurs manager failed to bring in anyone during the summer and without improving his players through coaching could see his side move backwards instead of forwards.

Thompson played 477 times for Liverpool and that might have equipped the defender with rose tinted specs, but he certainly has a point.

While Rodgers tried to bring in the best young talent around, those buys largely flopped and Klopp was left with a squad that wasn’t really fit for purpose.

After losing his best player in Philippe Coutinho, the German picked his moments and bought wisely – avoiding the curse of big spenders that hampered Spurs’ attempts to improve when they lost Gareth Bale.

Both sides have made a good start to the season, but Liverpool are unbeaten while Tottenham lost 2-1 to Watford before the international break. With Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris unavailable, the Reds will be feeling confident.

Liverpool now have a grueling schedule of games coming up and it’ll test their squad to the limits. With fixtures against Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea twice, Napoli and Spurs that strength in depth that Thompson raved about will be put under strain. But with a variety of options in every position, Klopp will be confident in his squad.
