The replacement for Andrew Robertson? Who is Liverpool left-back Adam Lewis and why is everyone talking about him?
Well Lewis is another lad off the Melwood production line and now he’s been called up to train with the senior side.
With Alberto Moreno’s contract due to expire in the summer, could there be a path for the youngster to succeed the Spaniard and eventually Robertson?
Lewis started his footy playing alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold in Sunday league stuff, and now both Merseyside youngsters are in with a shot of making the first XI together.
The 18-year-old has been a key part of the U23 side this season, and has started every single game. Alongside that, Lewis has 42 U18 appearances to his name and looks set to progress through the ranks at Anfield.
Normally a left-back, the young starlet has started one game in a midfield role – which shows his attacking instincts and flexibility of position. Modern full-backs have to be good going forward as well, and that selection proves that Lewis fits this mould.
According to the Daily Mail, the defender can play off both feet and possess the type of energy that has made Robertson such an asset on the field. Lewis can also cause problems from set-pieces, while his crossing can provide useful ammunition for his side’s forwards.
Basically, the lad sounds like a left-sided Alexander-Arnold. Imagine two Melwood graduates running amok down the flanks, getting the fans behind them and providing genuine class from the homegrown contingent.
While Moreno didn’t have the best time against Chelsea on Wednesday, talk of welcoming his exit from Anfield should be subdued. The Spaniard is liable to the odd mistake or two, but he isn’t get in the bin quality. However, if there is a plan to see out the season with Moreno and bring Lewis through for the 2019/2020 campaign then that would be welcomed.
