One stat that’ll surprise you from the Chelsea draw
Liverpool could only draw 1-1 with Chelsea in the Premier League, and here is one Daniel Sturridge stat that came out the game that’ll surprise you.
Sturridge was introduced to the game by manager Jurgen Klopp during the final stages of the game, and responded by scoring just three minutes later.
It was a beauty. A long range, curling effort that left the Blues in Stamford Bridge stunned and the Reds elated. It delivered a point from the jaws of defeat. It kept Liverpool’s unbeaten start alive and it also handed the scorer an important stat that is bound to surprise.
Because with it, Sturridge became the second fasted Reds player to reach 50 Premier League goals by minutes played. Fernando Torres did it in 72 appearances and just under 4,500 minutes – while Studg completed that feat in 6,320.
Luis Suarez trails the Englishman by nearly a 1000 minutes, although Suarez only took 86 appearances to Sturridge’s 103. But that shows the nature of the forward’s Anfield life now. He’s an impact substitute and an occasional starter, not the main man.
But also – how has it taken the England international so long to reach 50! It feels like he’s been at the club since the days of Adam and Eve, and this is another marker of how up and down his time on Merseyside has been.
Were it not for those injuries and lack of fitness, Sturridge would have got there a lot sooner – that much is for sure. This season he’s been a new man, but will have to continue to feed off scraps until the FA Cup comes around or Roberto Firmino picks up another injury.
With Napoli and Manchester City to come within a few days of each other, it’s likely Sturridge will get another chance from the bench.
If he keeps going with his current form, it might put some serious pressure on Firmino for the first time in a long time.
