Liverpool went to Italy to play Napoli in the second Champions League, Group C game of the season and lost thanks to a late goal.

Forward Lorenzo Insigne hit the back of the net in the 90th minute to hand all three points to the Serie A side, but the Reds had been lackluster all evening and probably didn’t deserve the win.

Things started off badly when midfielder Naby Keita was replaced by Jordan Henderson after just 19 minutes thanks to an injury, while Mohamed Salah endured another difficult evening in his tricky second season.

But despite their problems going forward, Liverpool looked solid at the back while Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk lead the line well. Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold also had solid nights down the flanks.

Those problems definitely existed up front though – and the fact that the Reds had no shots on target for the first time in a game since 2012 meant that they were never going to threaten to come away with all three points.

It’s a sad stat for a team who prides itself on being able to play with attacking verve and punish defenses, but the truth is that Liverpool haven’t been amazing going forward all season.

Despite an opening day hammering of West Ham , manager Jurgen Klopp has struggled to get the Fab Three firing on all cylinders at the same time. Something for the drawing board.

Speaking of Klopp, Wednesday night was also the first ever Champions League group stage loss the Reds have had under the German. You’d take that for a record and hope it never, ever happens again.

That win against PSG may now prove to be so vital if Liverpool are going to qualify from Group C. They should beat Red Star Belgrade home and away, as should Napoli and the French giants, so qualification could come down to the closest margins.
