Liverpool vs Everton: This Jordan Pickford comment has aged really badly
This comment by Jordan Pickford has aged really badly after Liverpool beat Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Pickford made a howler to allow forgotten man Divock Origi to score the only goal of the game with just seconds left on the clock.
As the ball was heading out over the top of the England goalkeeper’s crossbar, Pickford succeeded in palming it into the path of Origi – who scored an easy header to spark absolute scenes on Merseyside.
The timing of the goal is particularly cruel – especially as the stopper announced that he’d never make a mistake like Reds’ man Alisson Becker.
And while the error wasn’t induced by some fancy footwork, in many ways this is worse. Pickford had a routine decision to make and completely fluffed his line – and now Liverpool fans are gleefully reminding him of those fateful words.
The goal sparked wild celebration from manager Jurgen Klopp, who since apologised to Toffies gaffer Marco Silva.
Klopp threw on Daniel Sturridge and Origi as the German tried everything to grab that elusive first goal. Liverpool dominated the fixture without being able to break the deadlock until the dying embers of the game – and that made it all the more sweater.
You’d never pick the Belgian as the player who’d make the difference in this game, and could this result in a new lease of life for the forward on Anfield?
Dominic Solanke appears to lack the manager’s trust this season and he’s only made one appearance throughout 2017/2018. If he goes on loan in January, Klopp will probably want to keep Origi around as backup.
Victory on Sunday means Liverpool have now gone 14 games unbeaten in the Premier League and are just two points behind Manchester City, who are first. A five point gap has opened between the Reds and Chelsea in third, who also won on the weekend.
