Liverpool fans have turned to humour after their worst fears about Joel Matip were confirmed on Wednesday evening.

Matip has played the last two games for the Reds, and performed very well. With Joe Gomez already out, it was vital that the former Schalke man stepped up to the plate. But now that plate has been shattered.

James Pearce has reported that the defender could be out for six weeks and will undergo surgery to fix a broken collarbone.  That leaves Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk as the only available senior central defenders in the squad.

And so Liverpool fans have done what any good British person does in times of deep crisis: use black humour.

Most of the jokes circulating Twitter have gone something to do with Steven Caulker, but to be fair to them he’s currently unattached after leaving Dundee and might fancy his old job back.

After a promising start to his career, the 26-year-old’s prospects have taken a nose dive and he hasn’t played since August.

That loan spell to Liverpool was one of the strangest moves to happen in the last 10 years, and it’s of no surprise to find out that Caulker only managed to play four times for the Reds before he was shipped back to Queens Park Rangers.

Jurgen Klopp may not have many senior options available to him, but he’d probably be better off lining up alongside van Dijk than old Steven.

To be fair, it’s probably about the only position James Milner hasn’t played over the course of his career – and you could well imagine the veteran being asked to do a job if Lovren goes down crook at some point.
