If Agger was a youngster bought for a bargain, Scottish international Gary McAllister was the veteran free transfer that left everyone except Rafa Benitez scratching their head.

But Liverpool had a young squad and McAllister was brought in, aged 35, to provide experience and a little bit of class where it mattered.

The former Coventry City man was only on Merseyside for two seasons, but developed a bit of a cult reputation and had some big games when it really mattered (anyone remember *that* free kick against Everton?)

At one point McAllister pulled the strings in nearly every competition for Liverpool and scored in five consecutive games in a row. 87 appearances in two campaigns points to a highly influential player, while his nine goals were incredibly useful.
