5: John Arne Riise

John Arne Riise was going nowhere fast at Monaco before Liverpool swooped and snapped him up for just £4 million.

Whatever the club have with snapping up left-backs for a song and turning them into heroes, they should keep going because it’s working.

Riise had 348 appearances across all competitions for the Reds as he developed a reputation for being one of the best attacking full-backs in the whole league.

Those long shots and free kicks seemed to have a pace of their own and the Norwegian will always be remembered for that.  A fine player and an absolute bargain.
