4: John Barnes

When Liverpool signed John Barnes from Watford for £900,000, it heralded the start of one of the Reds’ best ever attacking units. With Peter Beardsley joining at the same time and John Aldridge already at the club, it was a fearsome unit.

And those predictions played out as Liverpool won the league and scored 87 goals along the way. On a personal level, Barnes hit 15 and was named Football Writers’ and PFA player of the year.

The four years after he signed were electrifying as the winger scored 77 goals in all competitions, but then injury struck and Barnes was forced to moved into midfield to accommodate his loss of pace and dribbling ability.

Still, 407 appearances later and Barnes is fondly remembered at Anfield. For less than £1 million, the club signed a player who scored over 100 times and played on Merseyside for 10 years. Not bad.
