Joel Matip

On a free transfer, Joel Matip joined Liverpool from Schalke in 2016. The Cameroon international has been a key defensive piece for the Reds since his arrival, especially before the introduction of Virgil van Dijk into the middle.

Known as an above-average passer for a defender, Matip put in some good performances early in his Liverpool career. However, he started to become a little shaky in the box as time went on, and as he started to get injury after injury, Klopp decided that there needed to be a better option.

Since then, Matip has lost playing time to van Dijk, Lovren, and Joe Gomez, but has recently wiggled his way into the first team because of a pile of injuries in the back line.
