Liverpool beat Newcastle United 4-0 in the Premier League on Boxing Day and once Dejan Lovren scored only one thing was going to happen.

Lovren opened the scoring for the Reds after only 11 minutes before a Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho sealed the deal.

Salah grabbed his from the penalty spot and then assisted the last goal of the day, scored by Fab the substitute. Shaqiri started on the right of the supporting three and scored his sixth league goal of the season as the clock approached 80 minutes.

Despite not hitting the back of the net very often, Lovren’s goal meant only one thing: an absolute hammering.

The last three league games in which the Croatian has found the back of the net has only ended one way – with Liverpool notching four games and keeping a clean sheet.

Bournemouth and Brighton were the other two sides to receive the Deggsy treatment as they were blown away following a Lovren goal. And now we welcome Newcastle to the club.

He’s arguably only playing because of injuries to Joel Matip and Joe Gomez – but the World Cup finalist is doing a good job and is helping calm fears about his introduction to the side.

Playing with Virgil van Dijk would help any player, and it certainly seems to be the case with Lovren, who has played well for three games in a row.

Liverpool are now top of the table, six points above Tottenham Hotspur in second. Manchester City have slipped to third after their second loss in a row – a situation that seemed highly improbable in November.

The Reds take on Arsenal on the 29th as they look to head into 2019 firmly entrenched at the top of the table. City are their first game in the new year in a massive test of Lovren.
