Liverpool vs Brighton: Fans ‘cant carry on’ with midfield trio
Liverpool fans can’t carry on with the midfield trio of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum.
Those three played against Brighton because Fabinho was played as a central defender due to injuries to Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. The Brazilian did well, and that lead to some calling for the former Monaco man to make the position his own.
However, this has been greeted with dismay by some – who can’t bare the though of Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum being named to start any more games together.
The Reds struggled to break down Brighton and only won thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty in the second half. Liverpool enjoyed 70% possession, but the Seagulls were organized and difficult to break down.
When Jurgen Klopp comes up against sides who are structured and get men behind the ball then perhaps that wasn’t the most dynamic midfield – but Henderson and Wijnaldum still played well and reminded watchers why the manager rates them so.
The win takes the Reds seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, but Manchester City and Tottenham are yet to play this week. Spurs take on Manchester United on Sunday, while City play Wolves on Monday.
Matip started the Brighton fixture on the bench and it can’t be long before the former Cameroon international is ready to come into the side – so Fabinho might not find himself playing alongside Virgil van Dijk for long.
The Brazilian’s versatility has been praised and it’s easy to see why people may consider a future for the former Monaco man in defence, but he’s simply too good in midfield to continue playing him alongside van Dijk.
Liverpool play Crystal Palace next Saturday and will look to keep the good times rolling. Fabinho may be back in midfield then, much to the delight of some fans who can’t wait to see Milner, Wijnaldum and Henderson broken up.
