The injury crisis at Liverpool deepened today with news Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the next month but Kopites saw this coming from a mile away.

Some times it hurts to be right. There are a number of Liverpool who will be ruing their prophetic abilities today as new broke that Trent Alexander-Arnold tweaked his knee against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. He is set to miss the next month of fixtures.

He is almost certain to miss out the home league games against Crystal Palace and Leicester, and then the trip to West Ham at the beginning of February. He is aiming to return for the visit of Bournemouth to Anfield and the first leg of the Champions League fixture against Barcelona on February 19th.

The injury is compounded by the already absent Joe Gomez who is still recovering from a fractured leg early in December. However it was the decision to loan out Nathaniel Clyne – on the back of an excellent showing in the Merseyside Derby – that prompted a wave of injury predictions:

Sure enough those pessimistic predictions came true. While the injury is a setback for Jurgen Klopp in the title chase there is some hope it won’t have an adverse effect.

The three of the four league games he is set to miss are at home against opposition we’d expect to beat at Anfield. Klopp has Fabinho and James Milner as options for right back from the first team. The Reds have a host of fit midfielders with only Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain missing from the midfield group.

He may also turn back to Rafa Camacho and Ki-Jana Hoever who both featured in the FA Cup game at Wolvehampton Wanderers. Gomez may also be back for one or two of those games.

With the Reds out of both domestic cups the fixture schedule is reasonably sparse. A small silver lining.
