Liverpool have picked up a positive piece of injury news about Joe Gomez after a series of bad injury reports over the last few weeks.

It has been one injury after another for Liverpool in the last two months. While the weekend brought some more bad news around Joe Gomez, some fears have been allayed with the latest news from a trusted journalist.

The Times reporter Paul Joyce confirmed that Gomez did indeed have surgery on the leg fracture he suffered against Burnley back in December. That news sent Liverpool twitter into a frenzy as speculation was rife we wouldn’t see the England international again before the end of the season.

While Joyce revealed on Friday that he is likely to miss the Champions League knockout games with Bayern Munich, today he revealed that Gomez will return before the season is over.

He also had news that Trent Alexander-Arnold was going to miss today’s game with West Ham, so his reputation for bringing bad news got a welcome boost with toady’s update.

Losing Gomez for more time is a huge blow as his excellent start to the season saw him becoem first choice center back. But at least Liverpool have cover at center back with Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, though neither inspire huge amounts of confidence for a title challenge.

The immediate worry is at right back where the decision to loan out Nathaniel Clyne is proving to be costly for Jurgen Klopp.

With Clyne at Bournemouth and Alexander-Arnold and Gomez on the injury table there have been a couple of stand-ins at the position in James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Rafa Camacho.

None has excelled in the chances they have been given and so it will be a huge decision for Klopp to make for tonight’s game.

Man City and Tottenham Hotspur winning at the weekend keeps the pressure on the Reds. They can’t afford to let any points slip tonight in London.
