Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara thinks Liverpool are a great team and play in front of a great Anfield crowd.

Thiago was speaking ahead of the Champions League game on Merseyside on Tuesday night in which the Germans take on the Reds in the last 16 of the competition.

And the Spaniard was impressed by Liverpool’s performance in the Premier League as well as by the atmosphere generated by the home support, which he labelled as ‘great’.  You can watch his interview by clicking play on the video at the end of this article.

Bayern come into the game as underdogs, largely due to their stuttering domestic season. Despite this perceived lack of success, Die Roten are only three points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund played, and drew, on Monday night in a game Thiago said the team would watch – but might not take a great interest in.

Liverpool have had an excellent domestic season and have only conceded 15 goals and lost once, which is why Thiago commented on the quality of the Reds’ football and their rate of improvement.

And he’s not the first Bayern player to talk up Liverpool or talk down their chances of winning. Earlier in the week Arjen Robben spoke about how Anfield was his least favorite place to play, while Joshua Kimmich conceded that the Bavarians wouldn’t be shocked if they lost on Tuesday night.

There is clear respect from the opposition players towards the squad Jurgen Klopp has built, but perhaps there is some expectation deflection at play as well.

Liverpool have had a break of 10 days in between fixtures, while Thiago and his mates have not. And while the former Barcelona man insisted it wouldn’t negatively impact their team, he did concede that having some time off before a big game would be the ideal situation.

“We don’t worry about free days, it’s better for them for sure, but we’ll be 100% (for the game),” said the midfielder.

When the dust settles, Bayern will still be Bayern. They’ll still have some of the best players in the world on the park, and they’ll still be more than capable of inflicting defeat on this ‘great’ Liverpool side.
