Liverpool travel to London to take on Watford on Wednesday night and we’re all ready to re-enact Troy Deeney’s nightmare.

And those horrors come in the form of Reds star Virgil van Dijk, the perfumed destroyer. Deeney hates playing against the defender, and despite his two-goal haul against Cardiff City on the weekend there is no way he’ll feel confident against van Dijk.

Back in September the English striker was reported by talkSPORT as complimenting van Dijk on his defensive talents. But that’s not all as Deeney went on to wax lyrical about his excellent hair and amazing scent.

"“I hate going up against him (Virg),” said the 30-year-old. “He’s too big, too strong, too quick, too good on the ball, loves fighting, a good head of hair.“One of those guys that sprays on his top as well, so it smells lovely!”"

When you put all those things together it must resemble a waking nightmare for the man tasked with putting the ball in the back of the net.

There will be one other player who Deeney will be delighted to see the back of: Joe Gomez. In that same interview, the Watford skipper talked about how good Gomez could become and the longevity he could have at the top.

Gomez is currently out injured and is only scheduled to be back at the end of March, while Dejan Lovren may take part in next weekend’s round of fixtures.

So that means Deeney will have to contend with Joel Matip alongside van Dijk. But even if Matip doesn’t get the forward, van Dijk will ensure he has a terrible evening in front of goal.

Deeney has been with Watford since 2010, when he signed for the club from Walsall. In that time he’s played 360 games in all competitions, scoring 120 goals and registering 55 assists. He’s less than prolific in the Premier League and has only hit the back of the net 35 times in 128 appearances but remains absolutely vital to the Hornets’ cause.
