Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has been unstoppable recently but talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has got some funny views on the defender.

Durham essentially said he’d had enough with everyone bigging up van Dijk and reckoned the big Dutchman wasn’t all that!

His co-presenter Darren Gough (the cricketer, by the way) wasn’t sure so and did mount a defence of the former Southampton man – but Durham wasn’t having any of it.

talkSPORT has got a bit of a reputation for saying controversial things for the sake of it, and this kinda feels like one of those.

Durham goes on to say that he doesn’t believe van Dijk is the best in the Premier League, or Europe, but doesn’t really offer any credible alternatives.

And as a result, Twitter was flodded with people annoyed at this type of thing. Never might stopping the superlatives, how about stopping the exaggeration in order to drive interest around the show!

You can see how good van Dijk is just based on the progression of Liverpool’s defence. An average player couldn’t have done what the Dutchman has. When Dejan Lovren or Joel Matip came in, the results were nowhere near as clear cut.

Van Dijk is a massive presence who is also assisting and scoring now. He’s vocal. He’s strong. Troy Deeney hates playing against him. And he would certainly walk into any side in the world right now.

The best thing about the lad is that he’s still got a few more years at the top. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship with Liverpool, but Klopp just has to keep him at Anfield.

No matter what Durham or talkSPORT thinks, I am confident VVD will prove himself to be the world’s best in the next few years – as he deserves to be called.
