Liverpool 3-1 Southampton: Salah breaks Torres, Fowler and Suarez record
Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 to go top of the Premier League and Mohamed Salah broke a record to leapfrog Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler and Luis Suarez.
Despite his eight game dry spell for the Reds, Salah has now reached 50 league goals for the club and become the fastest player to do so.
The Egyptian took just 69 games to do it in, while next closest Fernando Torres needed 72 fixtures to hit the same mark. Luis Suarez needed 86, while Robbie Fowler took his sweet time with 88.
That really helps put it in perspective when people talking about Salah having a poor season. Yes, that eight game scoreless period was poor by his high standards and the Egyptian did have a curious start to the campaign – but in between that he’s been on fire.
Salah remains a vital way that Liverpool play and Jurgen Klopp has kept his faith in the former AS Roma man – and now he’s been repayed with a goal that eased Liverpool worries and paved the way for a vital win.
Shane Long gave Southampton a surprise lead, before Naby Keita scored his first Premier League goal for the Reds to equalize things.
Jurgen Klopp was then made to wait a long time for Salah to score the second of the game, and after nerves were settled Jordan Henderson nabbed his first of the season to make things safe.
The ball is now back in the court of Manchester City, who drop behind the Reds by another two points. While playing before City can make things nervous, getting a win and forcing them to earn all three points during their game in hand is useful.
This title race is going to go down to the wire and Salah getting back in his old scoring habits can only be a good thing.
