Liverpool 2-0 Porto: Mohamed Salah lucky as Naby Keita channels Steven Gerrard
Mohamed Salah was lucky to escape punishment and Naby Keita channelled the spirit of Steven Gerrard – these are the main headlines from Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Porto in the Champions League.
Keita scored the first, via a deflection, before Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Roberto Firmino for the second.
Salah was fortunate to escape a red card for his awful tackle on Danilo as the Reds wound down the clock and eased towards the victory.
Jordan Henderson also proved how important he is to the team on big European nights as the Mackam put in a huge performance that should guarantee him a starting place in the side that takes on Chelsea at the weekend.
James Milner was selected at left-back because Andy Robertson was suspended. Jurgen Klopp could have picked Alberto Moreno, the specialist cover in that position, but Moreno has long since been consigned to the scrap heap and there would have been mini riots if the Spaniard was chosen.
Milner played well, but can’t offer what Robertson does and that shows a slight gap in the Liverpool squad. This will need to be addressed in the summer, but for now there are enough options to provide adequate cover.
