Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-2 to go top of the Premier League and video footage of John Barnes going wild while Andy Gray cries is all of us.
Divock Origi scored another late equaliser for the Reds after Xhedan Shaqiri played him in – a goal which sparked scenes of jubilation across Merseyside.
And in the beIn Sports studio, which the exiled Gray now works for after he was banished from Sky Sports and UK TV, Barnes gave a full celebration while his co-pundit looked like he wanted to be banished from the earth.
Virgil van Dijk headed home the first goal of the game before Trent Alexander-Arnold handled the ball straight into the path of Christian Atsu, who equalised.
It was then up to Mohamed Salah to hit the back of the net for the second time, but again Liverpool failed to hold on to the lead and Salomon Rondon grabbed the Toon’s second.
But then King Origi, who was on as a substitute for Daniel Sturridge, got on the end of a ball from Shaqiri and scored the winner.
The victory keeps Liverpool in with a chance of winning the league. Manchester City play on Monday night, and Brendan Rodgers could be the latest in the long line of potential saviours.
Firmino’s continued absence from the team must be a worry to Jurgen Klopp. The side rely on his so much and it’s so important that the Brazilian is fit for the second leg of the Barcelona semi-final on Tuesday night.
Liverpool are trailing 3-0 and only the most optimistic would think they can come back from that. But the Reds have previous examples to draw on and need to channel the spirit of Istanbul if they are to quality for the final.
And if they do, you can be sure that Barnes and Gray will probably have exactly the same reaction.
