Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: Oracle Arsene Wenger predicted this in his pre-game chat
Liverpool pulled off an incredible comeback to beat Barcelona in the Champions League at Anfield, but the oracle Arsene Wenger predicted the outcome.
Wenger was talking about the threat the Reds pose at Anfield when he highlighted exactly how and why he believed Liverpool could score enough goals to win.
The former Arsenal manager praised the Merseyside atmosphere and spoke about how it was the most feared stadium in the whole of Europe for teams to make a return trip.
Barcelona are great going forward but are poor at the back, he continued, which means that any side should be able to score a few past them.
Did Wenger explicitly say Liverpool were going to win? No. But he laid the blueprints for how they could pull off something special on Tuesday night.
Get Anfield behind them. Get something on the board. Run at the Barcelona defence and never give up. Wenger knows Liverpool do those things and he talked about how all the Reds’ strong points are Barca’s weak points.
It was an incredible, crazy night and one that we all live for. The goalscorers were so unlikely. Nobody would have picked Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi to hit doubles and send Liverpool through to the Champions League final for the second season in a row.
Momentum is well and truly behind the boys now. They’ve had an amazing season and it would only be fitting for them to go all the way in Europe.
The Manchester City machine is the only thing that’s stopping them for doing the same in the league and even that could be theirs on the final day of the season.
And if Wenger is talking about City, Liverpool and how the Reds can claim the Premier League I’d be inclined to listen close.
