No.5 – There is History

In 1995 Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United were fighting for the Premier League title on the last day of the season.

Kenny Dalglish’s Rovers side were two points clear and had to win to clinch the title. They had to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool while United were away to West Ham.

All the talk before the game was that Liverpool would roll over in the match to deny Man Utd another league win and instead hand club legend Dalglish another title for his honors list.

While every Liverpool I know wanted Rovers to win the league the side did not roll over. Blackburn took the lead through Alan Shearer before John Barnes equalized and Jamie Redknapp fired in a sensational free kick. That is the only time I have’t celebrated a Liverpool goal.

The Reds one 2-1 but United failed to beat West Ham by drawing 1-1 and the Kop got to watch King Kenny lift the trophy in another team’s colors anyway.

We did our job to make the league competitive. Now we need Brighton & Hove Albion to repay that karma and do their job on Sunday. Then the Kop will see the Premier League trophy for the first time since that day in 1995, except it will be Jurgen Klopp and the ribbons will be red.
